Tri-State review

Posted : 17 years, 10 months ago on 6 January 2007 11:20 (A review of Tri-State)

Quoted directly from a review I wrote a little while ago:

Tri-State is a strong, diverse and a beautifully produced album. Those of you going to purchase this CD seeking a solid trance album, Tri-State isn't for you. This is far from being an album of club tracks.

Most of the tracks on this album are new materials, with the addition of "Air For Life" (teamed with ANDY MOOR) and "Alone", both already well received tracks. But these two are far from being the highlights of this album.

Tracks such as "Tri-State", "Home" and "Indonesia" are three tracks which come to mind for being highlights. Their sounds are mellow and their atmosphere's are soothing. These are the more downtempo'd tracks you may wish to put into your chillout collection, something I don't usually directly associate with Above & Beyond.

Then moving onto the more upbeat sounds in which we're used to from Above & Beyond, "For All I Care", "Can't Sleep" and "Hope" are the tracks which get my attention the most next to the more mellowed sounds of "Tri-State", "Home", "Indonesia", "Good for Me" and "In the Past".

Even though there are a couple of tracks on this album which aren't on my list of great tracks ("Air for Life" and "Stealing Time"), Tri-State doesn't contain a bad track.

Conclusion: Whether you want those club tracks or you want to sit around and relax at home for a while, it's definately one to add to your album collection or playlists. I give it a 9/10. And I definately wouldn't mind hearing more of the mellowed tracks from these three guys.

Life Begins review

Posted : 17 years, 10 months ago on 3 January 2007 12:57 (A review of Life Begins)

Life Begins recently started airing in Australia. I didn't catch the first episode but have manage to catch the rest since and I'm glued to it.

It's engaging, and while it is a drama and quite serious, it's humourous but what's a British show without a bit of humour?

All Saints review

Posted : 17 years, 10 months ago on 3 January 2007 12:06 (A review of All Saints)

This is one medical drama, set in an emergency department in Australia, that I have liked since I first start watching it. It's great to see a medical drama that is more focussed on the lives of the nurses rather than the doctors.

All Saints takes you through many trips of a nurses life and what they have to deal with within their job, the pressures they're under and the lack of power they have when crucial decisions need to be made.

It isn't all focussed around the nurses work lives, but their personal lives as well, seeing many friendships and relationships formed and broken. And of course, there are some doctors, but what medical drama doesn't have doctors?

If you're worried about cheesy, unrealistic medical drama, I wouldn't say All Saints fits in this category. Many medical stories featured within All Saints are visually realistic with, quite often, stories a lot of us can relate to, which makes for hard hitting storylines where you can literally feel for the character(s).

Godsend review

Posted : 17 years, 10 months ago on 3 January 2007 11:53 (A review of Godsend)

I'm surprised by the low rating of this film, as I personally don't see what was that bad about it. It was somewhat strange and perhaps didn't make complete sense (maybe that's what I found so appealing).

It's true though, considering the actors in this film, it could have been a much better movie. It was very promising and could have been great, but it still wasn't that bad.

Beneath Still Waters review

Posted : 17 years, 10 months ago on 2 January 2007 02:42 (A review of Beneath Still Waters)

This movie really did have some potential. But what a load of crap! Probably one of the worst movies I have seen, and that is coming from someone who is easily entertained and enjoys movies, even the bad ones. But this was just too bad for my likings.

The acting was, at the very best, amateurish. The Spanish actors struggled with their English, so it would probably have been better watched in complete Spanish with subtitles.

The special effects were quite cheap too but in some places, not too bad. All in all, probably not really worth the time.

Wolf Creek review

Posted : 17 years, 10 months ago on 2 January 2007 12:27 (A review of Wolf Creek)

Wolf Creek had me on the edge of my bed the whole time while watching it. I kind of expected it to be pretty tame, and lame at that but was pleasantly surprised with the suspense throughout the film.

Every time I thought something was going to happen, it didn't happen. When I least expected it, it did.

Don't be a fool like a fair few people, watching this movie thinking it's a true story. It's not a true story nor is it even based on true events in Australia.

Mirrormask review

Posted : 17 years, 10 months ago on 2 January 2007 06:54 (A review of Mirrormask)

This is a surprisingly good movie. Very much a film for anyone with a (visually) creative mind as this movie is visually appealing and artistic.

The storyline could probably have been worked on a little as it seemed the usual good vs evil plot. But as I've said, visually, this movie is a blast. The characters and critters involved are strange but appealing. Definitely one to watch, at least once anyway.

Descent review

Posted : 17 years, 10 months ago on 2 January 2007 02:42 (A review of Descent)

It wasn't a bad movie. Definitely not the worst but it does have Luke Perry in it, which says enough itself.

Unfortunately, this movie and The Core are very similar, so I knew what was happening from the start. The storyline is different, for sure, but the concept is the same. If you enjoyed The Core, you'll be wasting your time with Descent.

The Descent review

Posted : 17 years, 10 months ago on 2 January 2007 02:39 (A review of The Descent)

This has become one of my all time favourites. There has been a few caving horrors out in 2005-2006 and I've seen a couple of them. This one is the best of them by far.

I'm not easily scared by movies but this one truly gave me the creeps. It had me glued to it the whole way through and was intense from start to finish. It doesn't have a boring a moment.

If you're a little hesitant about watching this because you've seen a couple of the others already, just check it out. You'll be surprised. I watched this before the others and none of them match The Descent, not even close.

Suggestion: Watch in the dark. Very dark movie. Daytime watching causes glare.

Echoes of Innocence review

Posted : 17 years, 10 months ago on 2 January 2007 12:11 (A review of Echoes of Innocence)

This was one of those movies that you watch and can't get out of your head afterwards. It was a nice take on purity.

For coming from a first time director, this movie is really good. It's not the greatest of movies but worth watching a second time as you will notice even more in the storyline watching it again.

Not only is this a good movie, the soundtrack is amazing. It just completes it.

I watched a cool flick the other day and reminded me of the days of Good Horror, you know, the ones that made you jump outta your seat. The film was called 'Seance'. I dunno whether jumpy horrors are your flavour but this is a must see.

You seen any good ones lately? any types of films I meant, not just horror.

Take Care.
